New documentation 📄and new plans 🗺️ - May 2025 Lego Sorter Update

This post was originally send out to my newsletter subscribers. The newsletter documents all my updates and imrpovements to the Lego Sorting bot. It is an almost monthly newsletter (in practice, I send out about 6 newsletters per year). You can read previous editions here, or you can subscribe using the form below.

Hello builders and makers,

In this update, I am finally saying goodbye to the EV3, its motors, its sensors and all the memories I have of building with it. But I have prepared a proper farewell.

Documentation overhaul

I have now fully documented both the overhauled EV3 code and the new Raspberry Pi code. If you have a little bit of experience with EV3 and Raspberry Pi, it should take less than an hour to get all the software up and running.

And that is only going to improve.

Compared to the original garbled mess of Python code, the current software is much more reliable. It is a lot easier to set up and does not require hours to train and finetune a deep learning network.

While it is not yet perfect, I think it is close to what it should have been from the start. Even though I am replacing the EV3, the Raspberry Pi software is going to continue to receive improvements.

If you can’t tell. I am proud and happy with the current state of the machine.

New beginnings

But I am not resting. I have started the first experiments with the Raspberry Pi Build HAT and Powered Up motors.

The goal is to make the machine more accessible. The Powered Up motors are much easier to obtain. You may already have them as they are used in quite a few motorized Lego sets.

Together with the move to Powered Up, I have a number of other improvements and changes I want to implement. I have already talked about some of my ideas in previous newsletters, but now I am actually going to build and test them.

More on that next month.

As always, your feedback is absolutely welcome. Thanks for following along on this journey. Happy sorting, and I look forward to sharing more updates soon!

Peter
